We’re in an era of massive turbulence and turmoil, but also energy and excitement in the workplace, as significant as the shift from farms to factories. The working alliance that succeeded in the 1950s and beyond is failing employees and employers, with real wages for non-managers not having risen much since the 1970s. From hybrid workers to four-day weeks, from fears of being automated out of a job to an increased appetite for unionization, HR professionals are facing relentless complexities and ruthless changes, making old ways of thinking about HR and people go out of date fast.

There’s a desperate shortage of the most transformational talent, with churn, not stability, becoming the norm. Even after investing vast amounts to recruit the very best and brightest people, companies often fail to give them the agency, tools, skills, development, and budgets they need to solve the biggest problems that the organization faces.

Having worked with senior HR professionals for many years, I have long ago been convinced that the strategic and breakthrough innovation work I pioneered with Fortune 500 companies only delivers extraordinary results when leaders and cultures have what it takes to deliver on them. Therefore, I’ve come to believe that HR, not strategy, marketing, or finance, holds the key to the kingdom of survival and success in our technology-dominated and disrupted reality because it’s people power that makes all the difference.

But sadly, HR is still too often seen as a force of compliance and control, risk-averse and reactive, rather than visionary, transformative, and courageous. This is a massive missed opportunity for HR to lead their leaders to a transformed future. As a leadership futurist, I not only engage and inspire audiences with what’s possible and what’s coming in the future but also invite them to reflect on how they may want to think differently and act differently to create the future they want to see.

For example, I could share how to make talent acquisition, development, and retention match fit for a complex, chaotic, and crisis-hit future. How exponential digital technologies can help unlock way more human-centric organizations, how HR can be seen as an encourager of innovation and growth mindsets, not a killer of them. How HR professionals can break through stereotypes to fulfill their potential as leaders of the leaders, how HR can serve as the wisdom keeper of their organization, unlocking the full force of people power, and ways HR leaders can lead sideways and upwards to ensure the leaders that they serve, forge, and don’t fail the future.

I saw the room go from a bit tired to very inspired. Totally engaging and fully immersive. You wouldn’t want to miss a second of it. It was powerfully supercharged right from the start.
