64% of long-term absences at work are attributed to mental health challenges, with 40% of US workers stating that their jobs negatively impact their mental health. Furthermore, 52% of all workers are experiencing burnout, marking a 9% increase from just a couple of years ago. Despite the increasing dialogue on well-being, resilience, and psychological safety, the comfort in discussing mental health challenges with senior leaders has significantly dropped from 37% in 2021 to a mere 19% in 2023.
A concerning 35% of workers refrain from engaging anyone about their mental health challenges, and a staggering 86% would not offer help to those facing such issues. These statistics, in the midst of constant uncertainty and perpetual crises, paint a grim picture. The impact is not only on an individual’s capacity to deliver but also on an entire organization’s ability to compete.
Resilience and everyday well-being are not merely nice-to-have perks but are essential for reaching and sustaining high performance. Without leaders and team members who have mastered resilience and self-care, the risk of stress, burnout, and behavioral problems disrupting ambitious plans and strategies grows.
Reflecting on personal experience, I cracked under the pressure of fast growth entrepreneurship in my 20s, facing burnout that cost me and our company in myriad ways. Additionally, coping with fibromyalgia, or chronic pain syndrome, since my time as a medic at Cambridge, compelled me to prioritize self-care actively.
Over 15 years ago, following my last leave of absence, I committed to never being toxically stressed or burnt out again. This commitment drove me to analyze hundreds of research papers, triangulating evidence on well-being and resilience with wisdom from philosophy and ancient traditions. This exploration led to the development of an accessible, evidence-based framework across nine domains of power.
In every customized keynote, I aim to amplify messages, elevate ambitions, and unleash energy, momentum, inspiration, and traction. I delve into the impacts of uncertainty, anxiety, and stress on our brains and bodies, identifying known and lesser-known signals of impending burnout and overwhelm. I differentiate between resilience, robustness, and what I term ‘regenerative fragility,’ the ability to turn intense difficulties into growth.
I offer insights on helping colleagues cope with difficulties and crises, transforming root causes of distress, and avoiding ‘Wellness washing.’ My goal is to be seen as a thought leader, challenger, and aspirer, working tirelessly to connect with specific audiences and exceed expectations. Book me as your keynote speaker, and let’s embark on a journey of transformative insights, fostering resilience and well-being in the workplace.
I saw the room go from a bit tired to very inspired. Totally engaging and fully immersive. You wouldn’t want to miss a second of it. It was powerfully supercharged right from the start.
