Purpose-led businesses outperform the market by over 40% and see their valuation double when compared to conventional companies. The highest-performing employees are three times more likely to work for a company with a compelling purpose, yet only 33% say their company has one. I believe purpose is a huge, often untapped driver of motivation, inspiration, and innovation. Purpose-driven businesses and brands may be the only way to ensure our planet and species flourish in our crisis-hit reality.

However, I’ve witnessed that talking about business and leadership purpose is easy; understanding what it is and what it isn’t, making sure purpose is clear, compelling, and concrete in terms of a benefit to the world, and avoiding purpose washing is much harder. There’s also a clear purpose gap in most organizations. While the majority of executives think purpose is essential to business, only a third of employees see evidence of this.

I’ve been an explicitly purpose-led entrepreneur and leader. I had a purpose epiphany in the mid-2000s after an intense period of burnout and breakdown. I realized then that for my own well-being and that of the world, I had to put purpose at the core of everything I do and everything my company does. Since then, along with my colleagues, I’ve developed a profound and powerful set of tools and practices to help people and businesses find and define a genuinely contributive purpose.
